Classic car owners in UK exempt from new VED fees
Starting April 1, 2025, new Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) car tax changes will affect many drivers in the UK. However, some motorists will not have to pay any new fees. Owners of brand new petrol and diesel cars could see their first-year rates increase by up to £2,745. In total, these drivers may face bills close to £5,500. But classic car enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief. Cars that are older than 40 years are exempt from the new tax rules. Cars registered before April 1985 will have a VED bill of £0. This exemption is part of the historic vehicle tax rules. Vehicles must be officially registered as historic with the DVLA to qualify for no tax. It’s important for these drivers to remember to tax their vehicles each year, even if they do not owe any fees. If they forget to do this, they could face penalties. The DVLA will send reminders before the tax is due. Driving an untaxed vehicle is illegal and can result in an £80 fine. Drivers can easily update their vehicle tax through the GOV.UK website or at Post Office locations if they don’t have internet access. They will need several documents, including a log book and proof of exemption.
