Clogau gold resumes production after 25 years
Clogau gold, the brand behind the wedding rings of several royal family members, has made an important announcement. This is the first gold production from the Clogau-St David’s Gold Mine in over 25 years. The mine, located in Wales, has been a traditional source of Welsh gold for royal wedding rings since 1923. The marriage rings of Princess Kate, Queen Camilla, and Meghan Markle all feature this rare gold. There were growing concerns that the supply of Welsh gold might run out due to the mine's inactivity since the 1990s. However, recent developments indicate that gold mining is set to resume. Alba Mineral Resources and its subsidiary, Gold Mines of Wales Limited, acquired rights to the mine in 2018. Since then, they have conducted thorough underground exploration. In December 2025, they minted three limited edition "Tyn-y-Cornel" gold coins, each containing one ounce of pure Welsh gold. These coins will be auctioned from March 30 to April 3. Clogau's Managing Director, Ben Roberts, acknowledged concerns about the dwindling gold supply. He assured that the company is committed to careful management of Welsh gold. He explained that each royal wedding band is unique and personally customized, symbolizing the rich heritage of Wales.
