Clooney struggles with smoking for Broadway debut role

George Clooney has talked about the challenges of his Broadway debut. In a recent interview with 60 Minutes, he shared that smoking for his role in "Good Night, and Good Luck" is difficult for him. Clooney mentioned that smoking a lot in the play was tough because of his family's history with tobacco. He said, "Everybody smokes in the play, so the place is covered in smoke." Growing up in Kentucky, he noted that many family members suffered from lung cancer, which makes smoking a sensitive topic for him. To fit the character of journalist Edward R. Murrow, Clooney is using herbal cigarettes. He admits he had to practice inhaling more effectively. Clooney also makes sure to smoke outside so that his children do not see him. This production marks Clooney's first stage performance, even though he directed the 2005 film version. The Broadway show will open at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York on April 3.
