Coaching instability threatens legendary figures, says Pitino
Rick Pitino, a veteran college basketball coach, commented on the current state of coaching in college basketball. He noted that there has been a lot of turnover among coaches recently. For example, Kevin Keatts was fired by N.C. State just a year after he led the team to the Final Four. Pitino expressed concern that coaches do not get enough time to prove themselves anymore. He argued that legendary coaches like Mike Krzyzewski and Jay Wright might have been dismissed early in their careers if they were starting today. Pitino believes that the current coaching environment is quick to judge and fire coaches. He thinks that these successful coaches would have struggled to survive in today’s fast-paced climate. Pitino highlighted several schools that have recently replaced their head coaches or are planning to do so. These schools include Indiana, Texas, and Villanova among others. He shared a personal story about advising Billy Donovan to take a coaching position at Florida, emphasizing the importance of giving coaches time to develop their programs. He also addressed the firing of Tobin Anderson from Iona, expressing that coaches, especially young ones, should be given longer opportunities to build their teams. Pitino acknowledged that his son, Richard Pitino, is coaching New Mexico, and he expressed nerves about the game they have against Marquette later. He hopes for the best for his son during this challenging time.
