Coffee drinker diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer
A 37-year-old woman named Abi Feltham was shocked to learn she has an aggressive brain cancer after misattributing her symptoms to caffeine withdrawal. Abi was drinking around 12 cups of coffee daily but decided to quit suddenly. She thought her headaches and brain fog were just from that. Her condition worsened when her vision blurred significantly, prompting her to see an optician. The scan showed swollen optic nerves indicating dangerous pressure in her brain. A CT scan at St Mary’s Hospital confirmed she had a mass on her brain, leading to immediate surgery. After removing a cyst, her pain improved, but she later learned she had a grade 3 oligodendroglioma, an aggressive type of brain tumor. Despite a prognosis of about 15 years to live, Abi remains determined. She has faced other health challenges, including overcoming addiction to alcohol and drugs. She now shares her experiences on social media, where she has gained over 2.7 million likes on TikTok, discussing sobriety and mental health. As an Ambassador for Brain Tumour Research, Abi is passionate about raising awareness. She points out that only 1% of national cancer research funding goes to brain tumors, which she finds unacceptable. Abi is also planning to write a book to help others dealing with similar struggles. Brain tumors are a serious issue in the UK, with over 12,000 diagnoses each year. They can cause severe symptoms like headaches, seizures, and memory issues. Doctors recommend seeing a GP if someone has unusual headaches or other listed symptoms.
