Coimbatore converts defunct borewells for rainwater harvesting
Coimbatore is launching a rainwater harvesting initiative as part of the Noyyal restoration project. The district administration is identifying 500 to 1,000 defunct borewells to convert them into rainwater recharge systems before the monsoon in June. A consultative meeting with stakeholders has taken place, and an extensive survey of the borewells will be conducted in the next 10 to 15 days. The project aims to enhance groundwater discharge through improved percolation methods. The district collector inspected ongoing restoration works at local streams and directed an NGO to implement the borewell recharge system. Challenges such as silt accumulation will be addressed during the installation process.
