Coimbatore federation demands end to electricity charge hikes
The Tamil Nadu All Entrepreneurs Federation is asking the state government to stop the annual increase in electricity charges for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). They made this request during a media conference in Coimbatore on Thursday. Key leaders of the federation, including chairperson MP Muthu Rathinam and general secretary M. Jayabal, highlighted the need for the government to honor its promises made during the 2021 elections. They pointed out that the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation has not enforced a decision allowing certain industrial electricity consumers to switch to a lower tariff category. They raised concerns about the increased fixed charges that MSMEs now face. For example, they stated that businesses are now paying ₹160 in fixed charges, up from ₹35 for less consumption before the tariff changes. The federation also demanded that network charges for solar rooftops be eliminated and called for the removal of additional charges on welding equipment. Additionally, the federation is asking for the establishment of a welfare board for MSMEs and marketing centers in every district. They want a separate budget for MSMEs similar to what is provided for the agriculture sector. They also urged the state government to advocate for the reduction of import duties on cotton and cancel certain orders affecting the textile industry. Muthu Rathinam announced that a state-level meeting will take place in Coimbatore in November, where representatives from about 400 trade and MSME associations will gather.
