Col. Detoyato advocates for reservists and veterans' welfare
Col. Noel Detoyato is a former spokesperson for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). He is now the second nominee for the Laang Kawal Partylist in the upcoming elections. Motivated by the needs of reservists and retirees, Detoyato has shifted his focus from military briefs to advocating for these groups. Detoyato grew up in South Cotabato, where resilience and loyalty shaped his character. He graduated from the Philippine Military Academy in 1990 and served in the army for 35 years. He reached the rank of Chief of the AFP Public Affairs Office in 2015, becoming a respected voice in the military. Throughout his career, Detoyato recognized the importance of reservists, who make up 89% of the AFP. He saw their dedication, especially during the 2017 Marawi siege, and felt they deserved more support. Despite having a significant budget, less than 2% of the AFP fund goes to reservists. He believes they need better funding, equipment, and training. As a partylist nominee, he aims to amend the Reservist Act of 1991. He wants to help reservists’ families with low-interest loans to start businesses and improve healthcare for veterans. Currently, the Veterans Memorial Medical Center is struggling to provide for many retirees. Detoyato emphasizes that a country must remember its defenders and the families that support them. At nearly 62, Detoyato remains active and grounded. He enjoys golfing and attending Mass with his family. He often reflects on the EDSA Revolution of 1986, which inspires him to work for a better future. He also advocates for the revival of the ROTC program, seeing it as a means to instill national pride and skills in young people. Detoyato’s campaign focuses on practical support for reservists, veterans, and ROTC cadets, including scholarships and stipends. He wants to uplift others, staying true to his roots while continuing to serve his country. His journey reflects a commitment to strengthen the fabric of the military and its supporters.
