Colby faces Amherst in NCAA hockey quarterfinals
The Colby College women's hockey team is set to compete in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals. The Mules, with a record of 18 wins, 6 losses, and 2 draws, will face Amherst College in Massachusetts. The game is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. Colby secured this spot after defeating Wilkes University 4-3 in the first round of the tournament. This is Colby’s third appearance in the NCAA tournament, all under coach Holley Tyng. The Mules have never advanced past the quarterfinals before. The Mules had success against Amherst earlier this season, winning both regular-season games against them. However, they had struggled in prior matchups, losing seven of the last nine games against the Mammoths before this year's victories. Amherst College boasts talented players, including Maeve Reynolds and Bea Flynn, both of whom have over 20 points this season. Their goaltender, Natalie Stott, has the best goals against average in DIII, making it a challenging matchup for Colby. Colby’s strong offense has been a key factor, with several players contributing significant points this season. Mandy Busky, the team's goaltender, has also performed well with a 12-2-2 record and numerous shutouts. This weekend’s matchup is one the Mules are eagerly anticipating, aiming for their first ever Frozen Four appearance. The other DIII quarterfinal games on Saturday include matchups between Augsburg and St. Norbert, and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls against Elmira.
