Colorado legislature debates gun control and abortion bills

The Colorado legislature's 2025 session faced a delay on Friday. Members of the Joint Budget Committee postponed the introduction of the budget by a week. Despite this setback, several important bills are still advancing. On Monday, House Republicans opposed Senate Bill 3. This bill aims to limit access to certain firearms. It will require buyers of specific semiautomatic weapons to undergo background checks and training. The House planned to vote on this bill in the afternoon. At the same time, the Senate discussed two other firearm-related bills. House Bill 1133 aims to restrict ammunition sales, while House Bill 1238 intends to increase regulations for gun shows. Additionally, lawmakers will review two abortion-related bills. Senate Bill 183 will support a voter-approved measure that protects abortion rights in the state constitution. This bill will be discussed by the House Health and Human Services Committee on Tuesday. The full House will consider another bill, Senate Bill 129, later in the week. It seeks to protect doctors who prescribe abortion-inducing drugs from legal actions taken by other states with strict anti-abortion laws. The Senate will also review a proposal for tax credits to attract the Sundance Film Festival to Boulder. House Bill 1005 aims to provide up to $34 million in tax credits. Finally, the House Appropriations Committee is set to discuss House Bill 1001, which focuses on strengthening wage-theft laws. This comes as lawmakers work to address a $1 billion budget gap.
