Colorado Springs man arrested after two-hour standoff
Colorado Springs police arrested a man on Sunday after a nearly two-hour standoff. The man faces weapons-related charges. The situation began around 11 a.m. when officers responded to reports of gunfire on North Circle Drive. Witnesses said a man fired a handgun during a disturbance and then drove away in a red vehicle. Around 12:15 p.m., police found the vehicle in the 4500 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue. Two people were inside. One person safely exited, but the suspect remained inside and did not respond to police commands. Ten police vehicles blocked the area as officers continued to urge the suspect to leave the car. Finally, at about 2:10 p.m., police used tear gas. The suspect, later identified as Jairo Fernandez-Vasquez, then surrendered. Police found a handgun in the vehicle. Fernandez-Vasquez was taken to a hospital for treatment, but there were no reported injuries in the incident.
