Colorado Springs nonprofit finds homes for pets of deceased owners
Randy and Linda Gearhart recently took in two dogs, Kimi and Sage, whose owner had just passed away. The car ride home was quiet, as the dogs seemed to sense something was different. They were surrounded by familiar belongings, which Linda hoped would comfort them. Safe Place for Pets is a nonprofit that cares for animals after their owners pass away. Founded by Joanne Bonicelli, a hospice nurse, this organization has helped animals for almost 30 years. It was born out of a need to reassure terminally ill patients that their pets would be safe after they were gone. Many pet owners worry about what will happen to their animals when they can no longer take care of them. The organization supports both the pets and their previous owners, ensuring a loving temporary home. Volunteers like Karen Spencer know firsthand how deeply pets feel their owners' absence. The shelter offers special areas for cats to help them adjust. Some pets settle in quickly, while others take longer. Each animal is microchipped for safety, with ongoing care in mind. Tammy Bennett, a volunteer and cancer survivor, understands the importance of providing reassurance during tough times. She sees positive changes in pets as they adapt to their new surroundings. The Gearharts have fostered pets before and are dedicated to making sure Kimi and Sage feel loved. They aim to help the dogs adjust and be happy until they find a permanent home. Despite the sadness of saying goodbye, they focus on the joy of providing comfort during a difficult transition.
