Colts sign Daniel Jones, adding quarterback competition
The Indianapolis Colts are set for an important quarterback competition this season. Former first-round pick Anthony Richardson will try to prove himself as a starter after a troubled tenure filled with injuries. To push him, the Colts have signed Daniel Jones, a former quarterback for the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings, to a one-year deal worth $14 million. While Jones may not be the perfect replacement for Richardson, his playing style fits the offensive scheme developed by head coach Shane Steichen. The Colts hope Richardson will show enough improvement that Jones spends most of the season on the bench. Former NFL player Ross Tucker believes Jones could follow a similar path as Sam Darnold. He notes that Steichen may design a game plan that highlights Jones’ abilities, similar to how the Eagles used Jalen Hurts during their Super Bowl run last year. Tucker suggests that employing quick decision-making and utilizing Jones' running skills could lead to a successful season. If Jones were to outplay Richardson and become the starter, it could signal trouble for current management. Falling short with Richardson, a high draft pick, could lead to significant changes in the Colts’ front office. Despite the addition of Jones, the team's success hinges on whether Richardson can develop into a reliable starting quarterback. The Colts have not made the playoffs in four years, so the outcome of this competition could impact the future of the current coaching staff and management.
