Columbia student claims kidnapping-like treatment during detention
Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student, was transported from New York to Louisiana under what his lawyers describe as conditions resembling kidnapping. They filed a lawsuit after a federal judge allowed them to speak with him for the first time since his arrest. Khalil was detained by federal agents while returning home with his wife. His lawyers claim he was denied basic comforts during his transport and was not allowed to communicate with them until recently. The lawsuit names President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio as defendants. Khalil, a Palestinian activist, fears missing the birth of his first child and is concerned about his ability to continue advocating for Palestinian rights. His lawyers argue that he has been denied proper legal representation since his arrest.
