Columbus Chamber opposes cuts to Small Business Administration
Leaders at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce are expressing concern over significant staffing cuts to the Small Business Administration (SBA). The SBA recently announced a plan to reduce its workforce by 43% as part of a reorganization effort. This move aims to cut non-essential positions and to end policies from the previous administration. The Columbus Chamber described the staffing cuts as "deeply concerning." They emphasize that small businesses are vital to the economy of Columbus and the nation. The Chamber stated their commitment to support local businesses, providing them with resources and networks they need to succeed. The Department of Government Efficiency has listed the Columbus SBA office for closure. A memo indicates that the office's lease will end on September 30. The Chamber warns that these cuts could harm assistance for historically underserved entrepreneurs, which includes federally backed loans and grants. These reductions follow President Donald Trump's push to lower federal spending, with Elon Musk leading the initiative. This effort has already impacted other agencies, including the Department of Education. SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler stated that despite the cuts, the agency will work to support small businesses. However, she acknowledged that the SBA had grown too large and mismanaged in recent years, prioritizing political agendas over its core mission.
