Congress accuses Nagpur police of bias towards right-wing
A special committee from the Congress party has visited Nagpur to investigate recent riots. They claim that the local government and police are biased in their investigation. The committee believes that right-wing groups are receiving silent support, which helps fuel tensions. On Saturday, the committee, led by Manikrao Thakre, was stopped by the Nagpur police from visiting the area where the riots occurred. The police warned them of legal action if they did not comply. Thakre criticized the state government, urging the Governor to dismiss the current administration for failing to maintain order. Thakre alleged that police actions are only targeting specific groups and questioned why no immediate action was taken against those who burned a religious cloth. He pointed out that police allowed a right-wing protest to take place, which escalated tensions. Thakre also commented on the police's response to the situation, suggesting they seemed friendly with the protesters. While some individuals were booked for the protest, he called it an afterthought, claiming the charges were too lenient. He accused the ruling BJP government of encouraging these actions through affiliated groups. Thakre said that the situation is often the same in areas where the BJP is in power. The Congress committee met with local Hindu and Muslim community members to gather their reactions about the riots. They plan to use this information to create a report on the events that took place. Despite their efforts, police denied the committee permission to visit the riot site and threatened them with charges. The Congress committee is expected to complete their report within three to four days and will submit it to their state party president for further action.
