Congress criticizes Indian government over MeitY's statement
Congress leader Manish Tewari has criticized the Indian government for its handling of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and its AI chatbot Grok. Tewari claims that the government is overly accommodating to U.S. President Donald Trump and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. This reaction follows a statement from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). MeitY clarified that it has not issued any notice to X or Grok regarding their use of Hindi slang. The ministry stated that they are currently in discussions with these platforms to clarify any legal concerns. Sources from MeitY noted that previous advisories remain in effect, but they are seeking to understand any potential law violations. Media reports indicated that MeitY is in contact with X to discuss Grok’s responses that incorporate Hindi slang. Grok is designed to answer users' questions and provide insights with a unique take on humanity. The chatbot aims to assist users effectively. The government is focused on maintaining public trust and has encouraged social media platforms to act swiftly against misinformation. In January, MeitY held a workshop on the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) to improve the safety of internet use. The event involved various stakeholders, including social media representatives and government officials. The goal was to enhance the grievance redressal system under the Information Technology Act, 2000.
