Congress revamps structure, aiming for election strategy improvement
The Congress party is set to hold a crucial meeting in Ahmedabad next month, marking the first such gathering in over 60 years. This meeting aims to address significant challenges and is themed around "Saving the Constitution." Rahul Gandhi's recent comments in Parliament have inspired hope among party workers in Gujarat, a state where Congress once held power but has struggled recently. Gandhi challenged Prime Minister Modi, suggesting that his party could be defeated in Modi's home state. He also expressed concern about disillusioned party workers and accused some local leaders of collaborating with the BJP. During the meeting, the Congress plans to amend its internal constitution to create an Election Management Committee. This is intended to establish a formal body focusing on campaign management, candidate selection, and alliances, which have traditionally been handled by various departments and committees. Gandhi believes that the lack of this dedicated committee has contributed to the party's recent electoral losses. The new committee is expected to streamline election processes and give more power to key figures like Mukul Wasnik and Ashok Gehlot. There is also speculation that Priyanka Vadra may receive a significant role in this new setup, potentially enhancing her influence within the party. The Ahmedabad meeting will be pivotal for Congress, as it seeks to revitalize itself through constitutional changes. This could also enable Rahul Gandhi to focus more on campaigning and his work in Parliament, while also diminishing the influence of some senior party leaders.
