Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. remembered for his legacy in New Jersey's 10th district
Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. passed away on April 24, 2024, after serving New Jersey's 10th district since 2012. He was the son of the late Congressman Donald M. Payne, who was the first Black person to represent New Jersey in Congress. Payne, Jr. was known for his work on healthcare equity and passed five bills during his tenure. Following his death, LaMonica McIver won a special election to succeed him and was sworn in on September 23, 2024. The Congressional Black Caucus continues to honor its members, with recent tributes to Payne, Jr. and Sheila Jackson Lee, both of whom died in office this year.
