Congressman urges Zuckerberg to testify on China engagements
Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, has formally requested Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify before a congressional oversight committee. This request is linked to recent allegations regarding Meta's dealings with China. The call for Zuckerberg's appearance follows claims in a new memoir by a former Meta employee, Sarah Wynn-Williams. Her book, "Careless People," accuses Zuckerberg of attempting to build censorship tools for the Chinese government to facilitate Meta’s operations in China. In response to these allegations, Meta has denied the claims. A spokesperson stated that they operate without services in China and referenced Zuckerberg's past statements. He has said that the company tried to enter the Chinese market but could not reach an agreement with the Chinese Communist Party. Wynn-Williams suggests that Zuckerberg went to great lengths to gain access to China. According to her, this included efforts to convince the CCP by providing briefings on technology and collaborating on censorship tools. The situation raises important questions about how tech companies interact with authoritarian regimes and deal with ethical challenges while trying to expand globally. As the issue progresses, the response from lawmakers and the public will be closely watched, especially given the potential impact on Meta and the tech industry.
