Construction of Samal-Davao bridge linked to coral reef destruction in Davao Gulf
Construction of the Samal Island–Davao City Connector bridge has led to the death of hard coral colonies in Davao Gulf, according to marine biologist John Michael Lacson. He reported that approximately 600 square meters of coral, including tiered table corals, are now dead due to siltation and algae overgrowth. Lacson noted that the coral destruction is part of the Paradise Reef ecosystem, which is crucial for local marine life. He criticized the project for lacking environmental protection measures. The bridge, funded by China, aims to reduce travel time between Davao City and Samal Island. Previous assessments by the Department of Public Works and Highways did not adequately address the impact on coral reefs. Environmental groups had warned that the bridge's construction would cause significant damage to the marine ecosystem.
