Container Road redevelopment nearing completion with safety upgrades
The redevelopment of Container Road (NH 966A) is nearly complete. This ₹130-crore project is being carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). So far, 14 of the 17 kilometers of the busy road have been finished. As part of the project, over 1,100 street lights are being installed in areas known for accidents, especially at night. The road has faced issues with crimes and garbage dumping due to its isolation and lack of lighting. Many accidents have occurred on this stretch, often involving two-wheeler riders. Non-governmental organizations and local associations have highlighted these safety concerns. Recent refurbishments have included repairs to areas that settled due to the soft soil beneath the road. This should result in a smoother and safer experience for drivers. Besides installing street lights, the project includes placing reflectors, concrete guide posts, and metal crash barriers along the embankments. The road features 12 major bridges, one minor bridge, and 35 culverts, all undergoing reinforcement work. Micro-concreting is being used to strengthen the bridges, with updates to important parts to prevent them from sinking. The redevelopment efforts began after the corridor was originally opened in 2015 and have shown a commitment to improving road safety in the region.
