Cop29 reaches $300 billion climate finance deal as developing nations call it inadequate
At the Cop29 summit in Baku, nearly 200 countries agreed to a $300 billion annual climate finance commitment from wealthy nations. This is an increase from the previous $100 billion target but has been criticized by developing countries as inadequate. India and other developing nations expressed strong opposition, calling the amount "abysmally poor" and insufficient to meet their needs. They had sought a minimum of $500 billion for climate resilience and emissions reduction. The agreement also sets a broader target of $1.3 trillion annually, relying heavily on private funding. While some leaders praised the deal, others, including UN officials, acknowledged its limitations and the need for further action.
