Countries finalize global treaty to tackle plastic pollution in South Korea
Countries are set to finalize a global treaty to address plastic pollution this weekend in Busan, South Korea. The agreement aims to regulate plastic production and harmful chemicals, with over 100 nations supporting the initiative. Currently, around 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually, with projections suggesting a 70% increase by 2040 if no action is taken. The treaty seeks to tackle the rising plastic waste, which significantly impacts oceans and ecosystems. Major plastic producers include China, the United States, and Germany, which together account for about one-third of global plastic trade. The treaty discussions also highlight the need for recognizing the rights of Indigenous peoples affected by plastic pollution.
