Court orders inquiry into cops in acid attack case
A court in New Delhi has ordered an inquiry into the actions of three police officers involved in an acid attack case. The court expressed concern that one of the officers may be trying to mislead the investigation. The inquiry will focus on Sub-Inspector Sandeep, Head Constable Krishan, and retired Sub-Inspector Ved Parkash. The case dates back to June 17, 2018, when a woman was attacked. Her husband, along with his mother and sister, allegedly forced her to drink an acidic substance. The woman was able to call her brother for help before the police were notified, leading to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR). The court found the responses from the investigation officers to be unsatisfactory. It noted that the first officer did not properly gather evidence at the scene. This included failing to collect remnants of the acid or the woman's clothes. Later, another officer seized some items related to the case, but there were questions about the timing of this action. Advocate Ravi Drall, who represents the survivor, emphasized the seriousness of the officers' mistakes. He stated that such lapses could lead to the accused being acquitted due to inadequate investigation. He also mentioned that similar issues have occurred in other cases, often without consequences for the officers involved.
