CPI(M) feud escalates over drug mafia allegations in Adoor
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] is facing a new crisis in Adoor, Pathanamthitta. A dispute has erupted between a councillor and the chairperson over serious allegations. The conflict began when Rony Panamthundil, a CPI(M) councillor, shared a voice note. In that note, he accused chairperson Divya Reji Muhammed of having connections with the drug mafia. He claimed she had delayed action against a local shop that was allegedly selling illegal substances. This accusation comes at a sensitive time, as there is a statewide effort to combat drug trafficking. Chairperson Muhammed quickly responded by filing a complaint with the party. In accordance with party guidelines, Mr. Panamthundil was asked to explain why he made such serious claims. A party leader stated that they would decide on further actions after discussions. The accusations have sparked political protests, with opposition parties calling for Muhammed’s resignation and an investigation into her alleged ties to drugs. In response to the turmoil, Muhammed has sent a legal notice to Panamthundil. She demands a public apology and has warned of legal action if he does not comply. She stated that his allegations have damaged her reputation and that of the CPI(M). Muhammed expressed her determination to resolve this matter fully, as she has served as a councillor since 2010.
