Crime ring stole iPhones using tracking software in US
A crime ring has been stealing iPhones right off doorsteps across the United States. This shocking trend has affected many households, making delivery day a stressful experience. Federal authorities arrested 13 people involved in this international operation. The group created special software to access FedEx tracking numbers and bribed AT&T employees for delivery details. They used this information to plan the thefts. One AT&T employee tracked hundreds of shipments and shared customer information with the criminals. This employee also received large bonuses for recruiting others into the scheme. The thieves, referred to as "runners," were then instructed on how and when to pick up the deliveries. Thousands of iPhones, along with other tech products like Apple Watches and Samsung phones, were stolen. Authorities believe there may be more people involved in this crime ring. The ringleader, known online as “CookieNerd,” is still in the Dominican Republic. He created the software used to steal delivery data and sold it online. For consumers, experts suggest requiring signatures for valuable deliveries to avoid falling victim to these types of thefts.
