Cruise murder conviction follows crucial mistake by husband
Lonnie Loren Kocontes, a former lawyer, was convicted of murdering his ex-wife, Micki Kanesaki, during a cruise in 2006. He planned the crime to inherit over $1 million but was caught after a significant mistake. Kocontes claimed he took a sleeping pill the night Kanesaki disappeared. He reported her missing, but her body was found days later. An FBI investigation began in 2008 when he attempted to transfer funds and allegedly confessed to a friend about the murder. Indicted in 2013, Kocontes has been in custody since. He now faces additional charges for allegedly trying to solicit the murder of his current wife to prevent her from testifying against him.
