Cuba faces extensive damage and power outages after Category 3 hurricane strikes
Cuba is recovering from a Category 3 hurricane that caused extensive damage, including the collapse of over 461 homes and a nationwide power outage. The storm, Hurricane Rafael, has since weakened to a Category 2 as it moves toward Mexico. More than 283,000 people were evacuated, with significant impacts felt in Havana. Residents are clearing debris and some have set up informal soup kitchens due to food spoilage concerns from the blackouts. Power restoration efforts are underway, but progress is slow. Classes and public transport have been suspended, and flights in and out of Havana have been canceled.
