Cubs release Nicky Lopez to explore other opportunities
The Chicago Cubs have released infielder Nicky Lopez after he requested the move. This decision came as Lopez wanted to explore opportunities with other major league teams. Lopez, 30, joined the Cubs on a minor league contract in February that would pay him $1.5 million if he made the team's active roster. His contract included an option to opt out if he was not added to the 40-man roster during spring training. Last season, Lopez played 124 games for the Chicago White Sox. He finished the season with a batting average of .241 and a .312 on-base percentage. As the Cubs finalize their roster ahead of the regular season, Lopez will now seek a new team.
