Cuellar says Trump's tariffs could prompt Mexico to negotiate on immigration and drug issues
Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat, stated that President-elect Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on Mexico could encourage negotiations on immigration and fentanyl issues. Cuellar emphasized the importance of trade between the U.S. and Mexico, particularly through Laredo. Trump plans to impose a 25% tariff on all Mexican products starting January 20, 2025, unless Mexico addresses drug trafficking and immigration concerns. He has also threatened additional tariffs on China for similar reasons. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reportedly had a productive discussion with Trump about trade and border security. Meanwhile, a Chinese state-run newspaper criticized Trump's tariff threats, warning that such actions could harm all parties involved.
