Cumberland's relocation program has eight spots available
CUMBERLAND — A relocation program in Cumberland has eight out of ten available spots still open. Despite over 1,000 applications, only five awards have been made so far. The Choose Cumberland Relocation Program offers $10,000 to people moving to the city. They can also get another $10,000 for home renovations or a down payment on a new house. This program is aimed at people who live outside Allegany County, work remotely, or are moving to Cumberland for a new job. Ruth Davis-Rogers, the city’s preservation planner, noted a high volume of interest. Applications have come from states like California, Oklahoma, Arizona, and North Carolina. However, only five applicants have received support. One person has already bought a house, while another is still searching. Three individuals dropped out of the program. One found a home outside city limits, while the others returned to in-office jobs and lost remote eligibility. This leaves eight spots available. The program will continue accepting applications until May 1. To qualify, accepted applicants must buy a home within six months and live there for at least five years. If they do not meet these conditions, the money must be returned. The city has also streamlined the application process with a new portal and email for inquiries.
