CUPE announces agreements for Alberta education support workers
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has shared details about nine agreements reached during the education support workers' strike. These agreements cover a range of improvements in pay, benefits, and job conditions. The agreements will last from 2024 to 2028. One agreement for the Calgary Board of Education includes a 3% wage increase starting September 1, 2024. It also has further increases through 2027, with options for additional pay or a percentage raise, whichever is higher. Health benefits are being improved as well. For example, some workers will see an increase in their health spending account by $300 per year. Employer coverage for health benefit premiums will also rise from 80% to 100% by 2028. Minimum workdays have been set to increase, with some employees guaranteed at least 200 paid days each year. Various roles, such as Educational Assistants and secretaries, will benefit from market adjustments that mean higher wages. Overall, the range of wage improvements varies, but increases average between 12.55% and 29.42% depending on the position. The CUPE is focused on enhancing the work conditions and compensation for educational support staff.
