Cuttack's e-waste collection plan remains unstarted
Cuttack's plan to collect electronic waste, known as e-waste, from households has not yet started, despite being proposed a year ago. The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) had aimed to launch the initiative last March. Mayor Subhash Singh acknowledged the delays but said plans are in progress to partner with authorized recyclers. The CMC's original proposal was introduced to address environmental concerns caused by improper e-waste disposal. Discarded electronic items like mobile phones and computers can seriously harm the environment if not handled correctly. The former CMC commissioner, Bijay Dash, stressed the urgency of implementing the plan to prevent these hazards. Residents are frustrated by the delay. Pradeep Sahu from Bidanasi expressed disappointment, stating they have to throw e-waste in with regular garbage. Rashmi Mohapatra from Mangalabag highlighted the importance of prioritizing e-waste management due to the rise in electronic device usage. Environmental expert Asutosh Debata warned that improper e-waste disposal could lead to soil and water contamination from toxic substances. He called for urgent action to ensure public health and environmental safety.
