Cyber attack disrupts academic activities at Notre Dame Perth
Notre Dame University in Perth is still dealing with the effects of a cyber attack that happened nine weeks ago. Students are facing challenges with graduation, finding classes, and submitting assignments due to disruptions in IT systems. Many students, like Holly Norman, are struggling to access their academic transcripts. Norman, who is set to graduate soon, has been unable to obtain the documents she needs to complete the accreditation process for her profession. She noted that her attempts to access her student email yielded no results, and it took her two months to get a letter from the university confirming her course completion. The university admitted that the cyber issues have created significant problems. They stated that they have set up alternative systems to assist students who need their results for employment. They are also creating support hubs for students to speak with staff in person. Nursing student Jack Hyde nearly failed an important assignment due to the IT problems. He did not receive information on how to submit his work until the last minute. Other students, like Sophie Bevilacqua and Jack Steel, reported confusion during enrollment and assignment deadlines that had to be extended. Staff members are feeling stressed by the situation. Scott Fitzgerald from the National Tertiary Education Union mentioned that they receive numerous inquiries daily about graduation and student records. He called for increased staffing and better communication from senior management. The university is working hard to restore their systems and ensure students succeed despite this incident. They have also offered extra days of paid leave for staff members affected by the increased workload.
