David Jolly considering gubernatorial run in Florida
Former Republican Representative David Jolly is thinking about running for governor in Florida's 2026 election as a Democrat. Jolly expressed his intentions during an interview with Politico, where he said he would decide soon whether to officially enter the race. Jolly has been critical of Florida's Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump. He noted that many Floridians are looking for change. However, it may be challenging for him to gain support in a state that has consistently voted for Trump in recent elections. In 2024, Trump received 56.1% of Florida's votes compared to Kamala Harris's 43%. Jolly is expected to face strong competition, especially since Trump has endorsed Republican Congressman Byron Donalds, who announced his candidacy earlier. Additionally, Casey DeSantis, the first lady of Florida, is considering a run as well. Jolly left the Republican Party in 2018, having served in Congress from 2014 to 2017. He has expressed concerns about the possibility of another Trump presidency, especially for the future of his children. The Democratic Party has struggled lately, with recent polls showing low approval ratings and divided opinions among constituents. The election will take place on November 3, 2026. Jolly has not commented further on his potential candidacy.
