Dawn ceremony launches national hikoi against Treaty Principles Bill in New Zealand
A dawn ceremony at Te Rerenga Wairua has kicked off a national hikoi against the Treaty Principles Bill and government policies affecting Māori. Participants will travel to Wellington over nine days, with thousands expected to join along the way. The hikoi will make stops in Northland towns, including Kaitaia and Whangārei. Organizers aimed to reach Parliament for the Bill's first reading, but it was introduced earlier than planned. The Waitangi Tribunal has criticized the Bill, stating it breaches Treaty obligations. Hikoi organizer Eru Kapa-Kingi expressed hope that the movement will empower Māori communities. He emphasized the need for self-determination and respect for Māori rights, stating that past governments have not honored the Treaty of Waitangi.
