Dayton wins NIT opener; Javon Bennett shines

The University of Dayton men’s basketball team had a great start in the 2025 National Invitational Tournament (NIT). They played against Florida Atlantic University and won 86-79 in Boca Raton, Florida. Javon Bennett was the star of the game. He made eight three-pointers, matching the second-best performance in Dayton's history. Bennett scored 30 points. Nate Santos contributed with 15 points, and Enoch Cheeks added 12 points. Dayton is the top seed in its region, but the game took place in Florida because of the First Four event at their home arena. With this victory, Dayton improved to a record of 23 wins and 10 losses overall. Both teams shot well, over 50%, during the game. Florida Atlantic started strong, leading at points in the first half. However, Dayton went into halftime ahead, 44-38, after closing the half with a 7-0 run. In the second half, Bennett continued his hot streak, helping Dayton build a lead of 68-49. Florida Atlantic made a late push but could not catch up. Dayton’s free throws by Bennett and Cheeks sealed the win. Next, Dayton will face Chattanooga in the Second Round of the NIT, scheduled for either Saturday or Sunday. The game will be aired on WHIO Radio.
