Deaf TikTok star Imogen Nunn died by suicide
Imogen Nunn, a 25-year-old deaf TikTok star, died after taking a poison she ordered online on New Year’s Day 2023 in Brighton, East Sussex. An inquest revealed that she had previously overdosed on her prescribed medication several months before her death. Nunn used her social media platform to raise awareness about hearing and mental health issues, gaining over 780,000 followers. During the inquest, her psychiatrist, Dr. Simon Baker, testified that he had met with her three times between March and December 2022. These meetings included one just three days before her death after Nunn had sent concerning messages. Dr. Baker noted that Nunn appeared to be low in mood and struggling with her mental health. She had previously harmed herself and was receiving significant support, including weekly therapy sessions. However, he stated that despite these concerns, there were no changes in her care. In November 2022, Nunn ordered a lethal chemical online and later told her support worker about her intentions to end her life. Dr. Baker indicated he was not involved in the follow-up regarding this disclosure, although he agreed that medical staff would typically respond more urgently to such situations. Two days before her death, Nunn texted her care team expressing increased suicidal thoughts. During a home visit, she appeared subdued but engaged in conversation. Ultimately, she chose not to be admitted to the hospital. The inquest continues, shedding light on Nunn's struggles and the responsiveness of her mental health care.
