A statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was recently installed near Pangong Tso in Ladakh, sparking debate among locals and army veterans. Critics, including Chushul councillor Konchok Stanzin, argue it lacks local relevance and was erected without community input. Some veterans suggest that a memorial for local leader Zorawar Singh would be more appropriate. Colonel Sanjay Pande emphasized Singh's historical significance in the region, questioning the choice of Shivaji for this location. The statue was unveiled on December 26 by an army unit in the area, not as part of an official policy. It follows the installation of another Shivaji statue in Kupwara district in November 2023.
