Experts from Care UK have highlighted an early sign of dementia that people may overlook. They state that difficulty in making decisions can be one of the first indicators of this neurodegenerative condition. Many might mistake these early signs as just part of aging, but they could signal a more serious issue. Care UK found that 62% of people with a family member diagnosed with dementia misunderstood the early warning signs. Suzanne Mumford, who leads Dementia and Lifestyle at Care UK, emphasizes the importance of recognizing these symptoms early. She notes that slow decision-making is common in aging but should be further evaluated if a person struggles consistently. In the early stages, individuals may find it hard to focus on tasks, follow instructions, or handle everyday activities. This could include difficulties in cooking, managing bills, or even driving to familiar places. Additionally, problems with visual interpretation can occur. For example, someone might mistake a shadow for a hole or struggle with reading. Behavior changes can also be early signs of dementia. People may use unusual language, become easily frustrated, or alter their eating habits. Some individuals may show no behavioral changes, while others may change slowly or quickly due to external factors like illness. More widely recognized symptoms of dementia include memory loss, confusion, and trouble finding the right words. Mumford stresses that if you or someone you know experiences several of these symptoms, it's crucial to seek professional help. Early detection can lead to improved management and better care.
