Dedniel Nuñez optioned to Triple-A Syracuse by Mets
Dedniel Núñez has been sent to Triple-A Syracuse as the New York Mets prepare for the start of the season. He had a late start in the Grapefruit League due to injury concerns. Núñez only played in two games this spring, and the team decided not to rush him back to the major league roster. Núñez had some forearm tightness last season, which limited his play. At Syracuse, the aim is to have him pitch on consecutive days and in longer outings. Mets manager Mendoza emphasized that it's crucial to build him up properly after his previous elbow issues. With Núñez heading to the minors, pitchers Max Kranick and Huascar Brazobán are now in contention for a spot in the Mets bullpen. A.J. Minter is also working towards a spot but is not officially on the team yet. He is expected to pitch soon, having returned from hip surgery. In a recent exhibition game, Alexander Canario impressed by hitting two home runs in a 10-2 win over the Marlins. Although Canario has shown his potential, there is currently no clear position for him on the team as he is out of minor league options. After the game, Mendoza took a moment to share condolences for the family of former Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, who lost his 14-year-old son to illness while on vacation. Mendoza and Gardner have a long history, having been teammates and later worked together in the Yankees organization.
