Deep-sea mining regulation talks continue in Jamaica
Talks on deep-sea mining regulations resumed in Jamaica, with countries and campaign groups urging caution. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is working on a mining code amid concerns about environmental impacts and an impending license application from a metals company. The ISA has been negotiating the mining code for over ten years, focusing on the extraction of valuable minerals like nickel and cobalt. A clause now allows companies to apply for licenses without a finalized code, raising concerns among member states about potential exploitation. Nauru supports a mining application from Nori, a subsidiary of The Metals Company, while other countries, like Chile, oppose this move. New ISA chief Leticia Carvalho aims to expedite negotiations, calling for significant progress by July.
