Delaware school districts face layoffs and program cuts

Several school districts in Delaware are facing tough decisions after failed funding referendums. The Indian River School District sought $22.5 million to improve finances, but voters rejected the proposal. The final vote was 5,424 against to 4,749 in favor. This outcome comes just a week after a similar referendum failed in the Smyrna School District. Officials in Indian River are now preparing to make budget cuts, which could include layoffs and reduced programs. Superintendent Jay Owens expressed disappointment but acknowledged residents’ concerns about rising costs and property taxes. He emphasized the need for additional funding to maintain educational standards. Over the past few years, operating costs in the Indian River district have risen significantly, while revenues have not kept pace. Owens noted that, without the needed funding, the district must find cost-saving measures. These could impact staff numbers, class sizes, and extracurricular activities. Teachers are worried about their jobs and the potential loss of important programs. Jordan Marvel, a teacher at Sussex Central High School, highlighted that cuts could harm classes like psychology and various sports, which many students rely on for engagement. The fate of the International Baccalaureate program, known for helping students earn scholarships, is also uncertain. Teachers have already started looking for jobs elsewhere out of fear of losing their positions. Additionally, morale among staff has dropped as job security becomes a significant concern. Smyrna's new Superintendent, Judy Deborah, shared that they have yet to determine a clear plan but acknowledge difficult choices lie ahead, including the possibility of staff not receiving raises. Indian River plans to hold another referendum later this year in hopes of securing the necessary funding. Meanwhile, both districts must prepare for immediate budget management.
