Delhi HC demands inquiry report on UP police arrest
The Delhi High Court has ordered the Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh (UP) to submit an inquiry report. This action follows the arrest of a Delhi resident by UP Police in the national capital without notifying local authorities. The bench of Justices Prathiba M Singh and Rajneesh Kumar Gupta issued the notice due to concerns raised in a petition. The petitioner, Satinder Singh Bhasin, claimed he was intercepted by UP Police on February 18 in Connaught Place, Delhi. He alleged that he was taken to an unknown location and was released by a UP court the next day. The court previously stated that inter-state arrests must follow proper procedures. They asked the Greater Noida police commissioner to report on the matter. The petitioner's lawyer noted that his client had not been summoned for a statement by UP Police, and the court emphasized the importance of adhering to judicial orders. During the proceedings, the bench highlighted the need to protect the petitioner’s safety and security. They also ordered that any CCTV footage related to the arrest be preserved. The court expressed its concern about the arrest not following prescribed protocols. Additionally, the UP Police had filed an FIR against the petitioner for theft-related charges in Greater Noida. The court also asked for the petitioner’s medical report from after his arrest, amid claims of physical assault during the incident.
