Delhi HC mandates Rapido improve app accessibility for disabled

hindustantimes.com

The Delhi High Court has given Rapido four months to make its mobile ride app accessible for people with disabilities. The decision came after a petition by lawyer and disability rights activist Amar Jain. The court found it concerning that the app had 207 accessibility issues, with 81 of them marked as high impact. Justice Sachin Datta expressed his dissatisfaction with the report on the app's accessibility. He noted that Rapido had not addressed the needs of users with disabilities, making the app difficult for them to use. For example, it lacked features that would allow users to request extra wait time or assistance with finding their pickup points. Rapido, represented by lawyer Vardhaman Kaushik, promised to improve the app within four months and to keep it accessible in the future. The court recorded this commitment and warned that failing to comply would be considered serious disobedience. In addition, the court asked the union ministry of road transport and highways to submit a report on regulations ensuring apps like Rapido are disabled-friendly before they are launched. The case will be reviewed again on August 13, 2025.
