Delhi plans to expand electric bus fleet significantly

New Delhi is planning to significantly expand its fleet of electric buses in an effort to improve public transport. The government aims to increase the number from 2,152 to over 5,000 by 2026. This move is part of a larger strategy to make Delhi the city with the largest electric bus fleet in the world. During the recent budget session for 2025-26, Transport Minister Rekha Gupta announced this ambitious plan. She emphasized the importance of this budget, stating that the entire country is watching the Delhi government. The total budget for Delhi this year is ₹1 lakh crore. Currently, Delhi ranks third in the world for electric buses. The existing fleet includes 1,752 buses operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation and 400 from the DIMTS cluster scheme. Gupta believes that expanding the fleet will not only enhance the public transport system but also contribute to environmental protection. The government has allocated ₹12,950 crore for modernizing public transport. Gupta stated that increasing the number of electric buses will simplify travel for residents and help protect the environment. She also encouraged the adoption of electric vehicles for a greener future.
