Delhi Traffic Police to impose stricter helmet penalties

hindustantimes.com

Delhi Traffic Police are increasing enforcement of helmet laws to improve safety for motorcycle riders. Senior officers have stated that failing to wear a helmet can lead to fines, as well as possible license disqualification. Last year, 1,551 people died in road accidents in Delhi. Of those deaths, 40% involved two-wheeler riders. A total of 611 riders were killed, and 2,233 were injured in accidents. Officers noted that many riders were either not wearing helmets or were using poor-quality helmets, which contributed to serious head injuries. Other dangerous behaviors, such as riding at high speeds, moving against traffic, and running red lights, also led to accidents. The law requires all riders above the age of four to wear good quality helmets while in public spaces. Violating these helmet rules can result in fines of ₹1,000. Officers from the rank of head constable and above can impose these fines. They also have the authority to seize licenses for those who repeatedly break the rules. The Delhi Traffic Police are now actively ensuring these regulations are enforced.
