Delhi's PM2.5 levels rise 13% on Diwali compared to last year
Delhi's PM2.5 levels peaked at 603 micrograms per cubic meter on Diwali night, 13% higher than the previous two years. This year's pollution showed a rapid increase and quicker dissipation compared to past Diwali celebrations. Nitrogen dioxide levels also rose, indicating increased traffic congestion. Nine air quality monitoring stations recorded PM2.5 concentrations exceeding 900 micrograms per cubic meter, with the highest at Nehru Nagar at 994 micrograms per cubic meter. A significant rise in farm fires contributed to the pollution, with incidents jumping from 60 to 605 on Diwali day. Punjab was responsible for 80% of these fires, impacting Delhi's air quality.
