Delhi's summer power demand expected to reach 9,000 MW
Delhi's power demand is expected to reach a peak of 9,000 megawatts (MW) this summer. This is a significant increase of over 300% from the 2,879 MW peak recorded in 2002. Officials from electricity distribution companies reported this rise on Tuesday. Last summer, Delhi's power demand hit an all-time high of 8,656 MW. The peak demand is projected to reach 9,000 MW in late June or early July, according to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited. To manage this increase, several steps are being taken. A BSES official mentioned initiatives like enhancing the power network, using thermal scanning to find hotspots, and advanced forecasting techniques with artificial intelligence. Additionally, over 2,100 MW of green power is expected to help meet summer demand. The city has seen a steady rise in power demand. It first exceeded 7,000 MW in 2018, peaking at 7,016 MW, and surpassed 8,000 MW for the first time last year. Power Minister Ashish Sood has instructed officials to ensure a stable and continuous electricity supply during the summer. In BSES areas, demand is anticipated to be around 4,050 MW in the south and west, while east and central Delhi are expected to reach 1,900 MW. For its part, Tata Power plans for a rise in demand in north Delhi to 2,562 MW this summer. They have made arrangements to meet demand, including long-term and short-term supply agreements.
